At Blooming Birth Company, we desire to be an altogether different kind of maternity practice --

a practice that goes beyond the typical one-dimensional care of rushed visits and standard checklists.

Midwife actually means "with woman " and that is why we've chosen our name to include

the word "company." Not so much for the business sense of the word as it was chosen for its definition:

"the condition of being with another, especially in a way that provides

friendship and enjoyment; a companion."

Our highest aim is to be with you and to help you navigate this incredible

journey into motherhood - be it your first time or your tenth. We are just birthkeepers,

keeping guard, while the beauty of life and miracle of birth bloom before each of our very eyes.

This gorgeous Red Spotted Purple joined us for quite a while yesterday. Our voluntary mascot for the afternoon of our Midwife Appreciation Luncheon at the beautiful Kincaid Manor.

Butterflies are living metaphors for personal growth, transformation, and change, so it had me looking around at the tables full of all these incredible women, listening to their stories, watching them laugh -- and wondering what kind of transformation, growth, and change was being set in motion by our coming together in that way. Independent, but always better together.

What I didn't consider yesterday was also their representation of strength and independence despite their delicate form. How fitting was that little visitor's presence at a midwife gathering? Midwives (maybe small, but mighty), from the beginning of time, carry a strong sense of independence and an innate ability to weather the storms (that occasionally accompany birth) that most of the rest of the population could not.

And, even more, butterflies remind us of beauty, elegance, and joy -- and that's a side of us that we might not always get to see in each other when we come rolling in at 3am or after a very long 27hrs... but yesterday was just for us.

Two days (and a grocery run) with the one and only, Dr. Stu Fischbein! I've done many trainings and classes on breech over the years (Lydia and I both have)... which were all, really, very good. I certainly always left knowing more than when I had arrived -- but none hold a candle to how invaluable this conference/workshop was to us. This course should be mandatory for every birth attendant program out there (medical and otherwise).

There are a few very good reasons not to deliver your twin or breech babies at home... but like I said... it's just "a few." The egregious number of mothers undergoing cesarean section (major surgery) and babies being born surgically, indiscriminately, without consideration, to appease "policy" is more than a travesty... it is criminal.

The research data simply does not support the unbridled use of a scalpel for these types of pregnancies or presentations.

Yes, absolutely use wisdom and discretion when choosing your birth team, and do your due diligence, but for the love, do not blindly consent to the lies and coercion of the medical establishment when it comes to (a lot of things, actually!) breech and twin birth!

As midwives, sure, we do not actively advocate for it, knowing that even the healthiest women, with no risk factors, can wind up needing support -- but we DO believe in women. We believe they want the best for themselves and are very capable of making big decisions that align most with their own core values.

What we do reject is a false sense of security in not having a skilled and experienced midwife present, but someone else who really can't be an effective "just in case" back up plan.

These, the most fleeting of m o m e n t s, are why we do what we do.

Mississippi not only ranks 50th (that is, last place in our country) in overall health -- but also in women's and children's health. More specifically, we have consistently ranked lowest in infant mortality, low birthweight, cesarean delivery, and preterm birth.

And we do only marginally better for our mothers: MS ranks 40th in maternal mortality.

We believe this to be a travesty at the highest level. And what about the homebirth rate in Mississippi?

>> .8% (yes... that's a decimal point.)

How we birth and how we are born matters. How we are cared for and how we care for ourselves throughout our childbearing years is critical.

The last few weeks before baby arrives can play with our emotions more than almost anything in this life! The eager anticipation, especially if we have a higher level of discomfort, is REAL... and every twinge can send us flying into go mode -- even when our thinking-mind tells us to "slow down and give it a minute before our hearts go all in."

But PRODROMAL LABOR can be one of the hardest thing to navigate. Contractions can come regularly for hours. They can even be pretty intense! But "pre-labor" usually only contains one of the three elements of active labor and can lead to frustration, exhaustion, and even unnecessary intervention if we don't have really good support.

So how do we know when it's the real thing? Active labor will be a combination of all three elements**:
• contractions will increasingly last LONGER
• contractions will increasingly get STRONGER
• contractions will increasingly come CLOSER TOGETHER

Anything less than that needs to be kept in healthy and proper perspective, and rest/sleep and nutrition must be guarded at all cost. Because IT WILL kick over at some point...

No mother stays pregnant forever. 🌷

** Yes, there are anomalies. There are labors that go extremely fast. There are babies born with atypical labor patterns. But, for the general birthing population, this is the tried and true, reliable formula!

You've spent the last nine months waiting and, finally, you're feeling those twinges coming at a timeable rate... they are getting longer. And stronger. And closer together. This is it. It is time.

You call your attendants and they start to make their way over. And the waves keep coming and taking you further and further from shore.

"How much longer??" you begin to ask.

"You're doing so well... your body is doing everything it needs to. Let's take another good deep breath..." But we really cannot say how much longer. It is the fullest form of surrender.

And in time, wave after wave, you begin to sense that urge that seems to take over -- body and mind. You couldn't stop it if you wanted to... and your baby arrives into your waiting arms. It seems they've been waiting forever.

For some this all occurs in the matter of 15 minutes. For others this takes 24 hours or more.
For yet others, they experienced the confusing and frustrating and dreaded "prodromal labor," and it seemed like labor took weeks.

There is an old obstetrical study that actually found it's way into birth that, interesting and notable as it was, it ended up shaping modern birth in a way that, perhaps, did not serve it as well as it might have intended >> FRIEDMAN'S CURVE

It put two categories of mothers on the clock. The first time mother was given 12-14 hours to reach 10 cm and the "experienced" mother (everyone else who is not a first-timer) was given 8-10 hours.

This introduced frequent vaginal exams, heavier use of pitocin, and more frequent other interventions.

And our modern "safer" birth was born... or was it?

When mamababy IS WELL, regardless if they are two or ten hours over Friedman's Curve, we keep feeding them, resting them, moving them, watching them, working hard with them, and yes, w a i t i n g a little bit longer with them. Nothing happens "just because" here. We are experienced care coupled with intimate relationship.

We are your birthing "company!"

In this day and age of instant EVERYTHING, well, I'll just say -- a long pre-labor definitely doesn't fit into the convenience box of our instant gratification culture.

Where are all my Call the Midwife peeps? After a two season hiatus, I am finally in season 6 and am so fascinated watching the societal shift from home to hospital happen! 😭 Such a travesty... Not hospital birth itself, but the forcing out of options... And not only the options, but the forcing out of normal birth as it has happened for millennia. 💗 I felt a bit like Jenny or one of the sisters 🙈😜 the other day as I went from one new prenatal visit where we snacked and chatted (and did important stuff, too) to a fun six week check where we sat and visited for longer than we spent examining. I love it! No 20 minute cut-offs with us... #bloomingbirthcompany #itsallaboutthemamasandbabies #neverabouttheclock

💕When the midwife is in a season of life that limits her travel to all the awesome conferences going on... she starts her day off with skills practice with other local midwives and then loads up her schedule with all manner of documentaries and birth-work related webinars! I am so thankful to have such easy access to all this important information! 🌸

I finally did it. I got my diastasis recti (abdominal muscle separation) and pelvic floor professionally assessed (thanks, Jen, if you see this!)! I am *so excited* not to look 5 months pregnant by the end of the day anymore and am so looking forward to not "leaking" a little if my bladder is a little full when I sneeze! (I only share that so freely because I know it's not as rare as we'd all like to believe. 😜) I have needlessly dealt with this for too long. Friends - a quick once over by someone who understands it all is so easy and so worth it. -- So, some good news for you: you don't have to be like me - 6 kids down and 14 years later - a referral for this evaluation is just one more thing we are proud to offer all of our blooming mamas! 🌸

(Funny movie line running through my head here, but I'll try to keep it professional 😉) When there is a birth lull, we still study, keep up on the latest relevant studies and research, and practice for those rare situations -- this month we are looking at hemorrhage: the many various causes, techniques for management, and accurate estimation of blood loss. *Side note: There are surprisingly quite a few recipes out there for fake blood... This one worked great!
